Do I need a speaker or an amplifier type of thingy if I plan on purchasing an electronic drum kit?

Will it be needed, or can I just plug in my headphones and I will be able to hear everything like that and so on? And about how often (average) will I be forced to change the drum pads if they even need changing. ( I enjoy playing fast and powerful) :) Thank you beforehand. :)
