Theists: how do you know believing in God helps you get to heaven? Maybe it sends you to hell?

It says you're right in an old book. But what evidence is there that could possibly verify this? Can we verify that Person X who obeyed Doctrine Y indeed went to heaven? Or does it seem exactly like a cheap scam?
